Course Outline + Evaluation
Welcome to BC First Nations 12 at Penticton Secondary School. This course is primarily B.C. focused and will aim to teach all students to understand and respect the traditions, values, and beliefs of B.C. First Nations. We will achieve this by investigating the past, present and future of B.C. First Nations. This course is designed to give you a perspective and understanding of current and historical First Nations issues.
Evaluation

The course evaluation above is out of 100%. This will constitute your CLASS mark. Whatever you earn here will be your grade going into the Provincial Exam. THESE MARKS ARE SEMESTER BASED NOT TERM BASED

Understanding the Evaluation + Expectations
Daily 5 Quizzes:
-Daily quiz. usually 5 marks (could be more / could be less)
-quiz takes place at the beginning of class
-not meant to be difficult. meant to be a review tool
-missed quizzes can be made up, but will not be excused (some exceptions can be made here)
Assignments:
-Throughout the term you will be asked to complete a number of projects and assignments
-will come in many different forms (posters / powerpoints / presentations etc.)
-Complete. Submit. Earn your mark. Not happy? Negotiate with me to possibly increase your mark :-)
Talking Circles:
-weekly opportunities to safely talk about issues and themes that come up in the course
-we will move desks and form a circle to sit in
-the formation of a circle symbolizes equality / harmony / safety / respect
-you only speak when you hold the talking stick
-you can always pass and choose not to talk, however you will be required to write a paragraph on the topic
Current Events:
-every Wednesday students will be expected to bring one “current event” to class to share
-please see handout for details regarding process and evaluation
Tests:
-there will be 4-5 tests throughout the course:
1. Map test -- identifying traditional nations of BC
2. Unit 1 Test -- Traditional Lifestyle
3. Unit 2 Test -- Contact and Colonization (AKA European Takeover)
4. Unit 3 Test -- Contemporary Issues
5. Unit 4 Test -- Aboriginal Cultural Expression
Provincial Exam:
-55 multiple choice
-2 Essays
-Exam is created by the BC Ministry of Education
-ALL STUDENTS MUST WRITE IT
-Anything covered in the class is fair game.
